Can be done with a small flat screwdriver and plenty of lubricant, but the screwdriver WILL slip at some point, so always work towards the glass, not the paintwork.
Whether you do it the hard way, by hand, or the easy way, with the tool, use plenty of lubricant, and keep compressing the strip back towards what you've already fitted. Don't let the tool pull on the strip, or you'll end up cutting a piece off of the end, and over time, it'll shrink back and leave a gap.

Surprised you say that. My own tool is similar looking to the one in the second link, and makes the job very easy.
Stabbing your hand is preferable to stabbing the paintwork.
