Just a quickie:

Is the black goop that sticks the vapour seal to the inner door surface a butyl rubber compound of some sort?

recommendations?

It is indeed, and typing butyl sealant strip into google or ebay will bring up plenty of options.
It's reusable if you can stop it sticking to itself.
