I remember changing the siren box thing about 10 years ago when I was careless with a pressure washer
it is all OEM BMW system for a 1991 325I SPORT

my team think it may need a new alarm battery! Any idea where it is located?

I recently deleted my alarm system (don't know if it was the standard system(it was a gemini system)). but it was fed by a 12v+ cable that came from the car's battery.
i can't imagine why they would use a seperate battery for the alarm system.

This was an aftermarket alarm, installed by an aftermarket alarm installer, who didn't know how to connect it properly, and any alarm that doesn't have its own battery is close to useless.guuskolo wrote:I recently deleted my alarm system (don't know if it was the standard system(it was a gemini system)). but it was fed by a 12v+ cable that came from the car's battery.

It takes a couple of seconds to open the bonnet and put a pair of shears through the battery negative lead, silencing any alarm without its own battery. You can then deal with the alarm and immobiliser at leisure, clip a jump lead from battery negative to the body and be on your way with the car.
The 'standard' BMW E30 alarm doesn't have a closure feature, although this was available as a (very rare) extra as an additional module, but yours is a fairly late car, and a few of those were dealer fitted with E36 type alarm/immobilisers. There may possibly be a version of these with an integral closure function, but the window wiring is considerably different on an E36, and I would have thought some kind of interface module would still be required.
In short, first thing that needs to be established is what you have.

The system is Defo BMW as it has BMW roundals on it
the switch for the closure on or off is a small led light that extends below the centre vent. if switched off the self locking just self locks- if on it used to close all windows and sunroof
is that an E36 feature?
being a run-out J plated 91 model Big Red has those late features such as downlights in the rear view mirror and of course it came with a Cat.

E30's usually had the Gemel style alarm fitted, the siren has the back up battery inside it hence the key switch to disable it if the car battery is to be disconnected,

The main control unit was usually fitted behind the glovebox.

perfect thank you
that is the unit I have
where is the battery (in the unit please?)
I have now changed the car battery and the self closing now works- but not the door locking- and the u
nit is giving off a low battery squeak like those smoke alarms on low 9v battery!

Battery is in the siren box, which is easily opened up, and a constant whine is what they do when the battery fails. Suitable NiCd/NiMH battery packs can be found - I think the couple I've replaced were intended as replacements for emergency escape lights.
No closure function with this alarm, so you must have the rare optional module tucked away somewhere, possibly with the alarm controller, behind the glovebox.

I have taken it off and opened it up
to change the battery is not a job for the rock ape; as it is far from simple requiring the removal of the mother board etc
so I will take it to an alarm guy I know
Discovered the alarm bracket is rusty so am derusting and painting before putting it all back togther
thanks for your help
