Well, knew it wouldn't be long before I was posting here...
After reading previous woes in this forum it would seem the cause is a door seal or similar. Any thoughts greatly appreciated but I think on this occasion if there was a garage knowledgeable in E30s near Bristol or Cheltenham that could have a look an save me stripping seats and using talcum powder, I'd probably do that.

lift the rear seat base after the cars been outside in rain or hose pipe it down , there may well be a puddle under there . is the boot dry ??

Boot dry, under seats is bobbles of wet, almost like a thick drizzle effect.

i think the water in the rear floor carpet comes from under the rear seat base and trickles forward , not sure where it comes from though
