the e30 i was told has a weight added to the rear right had side (drivers side) because in germany it balanced the car as the driver sits on the left hand side.
is this true - i had mine removed due to this was that wrong?

The 'weight', (cabs only), is a harmonic vibration damper, and nothing whatsoever to do with what you've been told.
The last time Renault were to the forefront of F1, their success was largely due to the development of a harmonic vibration damper, working in the same way, hidden in the nose cone. After being discovered, it was promptly banned, and Renault's fortunes in F1 faded away.

Shouldn't worry about it too much. On an E30 that is in top condition, where all the suspension bushes are good, the design of the suspension hasn't been destroyed by excessive 'lowering', you'd notice a small, but significant, improvement by putting things back as they should be, but for any E30 where each MOT test is a lottery, running on 100,000 mile old dampers and generally subject to distress servicing only, it's not going to make much difference.
