I have an 1988 325 with 63 litre tank, I believe my fuel pump is u/s , I've not removed it yet but can I purchase the pump only rather than the whole unit .? The ones I've seen on Ebay seem to show only 1 electrical connection whereas mine has 2, a 3 x pin and a 2 x pin connector http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291562430701? ... EBIDX%3AIT

or the pump only

Thanks

Your fuel pump has two pins. The three pin connector is for the fuel level sender and low fuel switch, which are contained in a separate unit as part of the fuel pump assembly, and MUST be removed before the fuel pump and the rest of the assembly can be removed from the tank.
Keeping quality of the item out of the discussion, you can go for whichever of the two you choose. Obviously one drops straight in, while the cheaper one is going to need some bodging skills, and doesn't appear to come with the pick up filter, which may cause further problems, as the original may not fit, and is often damaged.
The wires to the pump must be connected the right way around. (red = +).

Thanks Brian (again), it's not a case of funds but what the best option but now I've removed it i will go for a complete unit .I seem to be going two steps forward and 3 back , the car was driven yesterday for the 1st time in months to check if the speedo is working ( its not ) and went about 10 yards before cutting out ,I've just replaced , fuel filter new fuel line , pressure regulator , fuel & DME pump relay , injectors removed and professionally cleaned with new seals etc.after replacing the above the car started 1st turn with no pressure on the pedal & idled fine but with the low fuel warning light on so that must have been the final straw for the pump ,I've bench tested the pump but theres no life at all now when previously it was a little noisy but not excessive .

I have a feeling I'll be back :D

Yep , thanks its sorted and working now , it looks like the original gave up after 28 years so not a bad piece of engineering to last this long
