This may be an obvious question but is this the same as fitted to the E36 318is? I need an engine for my e30 318is and can only find E36 versions...

No its not mate, the E36 used the M44, although some of the very early ones used the M42 i think there was still differences.

These differences should be surmountable though, if you have an E30 iS engine to get parts from.

If i remember right from an article i read on this, you can use an e36 engine but with the engine management kit from the e30.

the e36 318is is the same, its only the inlet manifold and the fuel map thats different.

this engine will work in an e30 if you swap the manifolds and engine management around...

the m44 was the 1.9 lump that was in the 318ti compacts

Not strictly true, the E36 318is used the M42 1.8 engine until May 1996 when they changed to the M44 1.9 same as the Z3.

The M42 E36 engine would work with the E30 manifolds and engine management, pretty sure the M44 would need more work though.

Cheers,

Read the M42/M44 article in this month's TBMW magazine... it's not as straight forward as it seems.

If you use a E36 engine, chances are it will only have one temperature sender in the head, you may need to drill and tap another temp sender for use in the E30, unless the E36 sender is a dual temp sender, if so then just rewire this into the E30 loom.

been wondering something similar myself

but, to replace the m42 with the m44, surely all you would need would be the complete m44 and loom. right?
