Hi all my 316i has delevoped a very loud tapping noise and it doesn't rev higher than 2/3000 rpm. I have had it looked at and have been told the cam has gone and the tappets need replacing. Is there anyone on the zone who can do this for me or recommend someone who can. I am located in west London not too far from Heathrow. Thanks for reading

A complete replacement engine from someone trustworthy on here would be a simpler and cheaper option. Maybe even replace it with a 1.8.

I have a decent 1.8 engine I'm about to take out for a V8 swap.
I only want £50.
I'm in Leicester though.

Brianmooore - yeah that's what I thought ..I've also read on here that people have changed all the bits and it still taps.
TPS - I spoke to Pete earlier today he also said changing all the bits isn't a guaranteed fix.
Yeti - I'm in Hayes, Middlesex.
Chu346 - pm'd

M40s tap with faulty hydraulic tappers, M40s tap with a worn cam, and they tap with both.
The difference is that noisy tappets are largely just that, and don't really cause any extra damage or cause any significant performance loss, whereas, as you've found out, a worn cam in a M40 does a very good impression of a very low rev. limiter.
Replacing all the relevant bits will cure the problem, and the cure will last as long as there is adequate oil supply to the top end, but even then, new tappers can give trouble in as little as 60.000 miles. Then there is the cost of all those new parts, even if they are relatively easy and quick to fit, and you still only have a 1.6 at the end of it.
