Steering problem

I gave my touring to a garage to investigate a slight knocking from the front and they said it was down to the rack being a bit loose on the subframe and the locking tabs weren't engaged. Fair enough, I went to pick it up but now the steering is extremely notchy from lock to lock and feels terrible. I didn't take it away with me and told them to sort it out, but what could have happened to cause this?
