im doing a head gasket on a m10,if i get the head skimmed should i use a thicker gasket?

Few blobs of plasticine on top of a piston, reassemble with a used, compressed gasket and head bolts tight but not torqued down. Turn over by hand, take it apart again, and check the plasticine thickness.

how much did you get skimmed off? 20 thou is only 0.5mm so i shouldnt worrie if so

You can never be sure that you're the first one to skim it, though, plus it's good experience to do the job 'properly'.
