Should the OBC buttons light up?

As above the display lights up but not the buttons,
has the bulb gone?

Yes, they should light up. Small capless bulb in a holder in the middle of the back of the unit, similar to those on the instrument cluster.
Only you can tell if the bulb has gone!

Most common bulb in an E30 - there's a dozen or so in various places.

I take it the the bulb and the plastic holder are all one thing,

etk shows it as all one piece, but versions exist where just the bulb is replaceable.
