I have a 316i M40 engine coupe and about a month ago I cracked my sump quite badly on a raised manhole cover as they were resurfacing the road.

I didn't realise it was cracked at the time and continued on my journey home and on the motorway the car stopped.

I got the car home and after a little investigating found that the sump was cracked.

So today I finished changing the lower sump and I put a new oil filter and new oil in, and now the car will not start.

It turns over and sounds like it's fine turning over but just won't fire up. The oil light goes out when cranking the engine and stays off for a couple of seconds after you stop cranking the engine and then comes back on.

Does anybody know what I should be looking at next?

Any help is appreciated.

If lack of oil in the cracked sump was the reason for it stopping, then it's unlikely to ever run again, and would have been making some horrendous noises before it actually quit. The oil pressure warning light would also have been on for some time.
If the car just stopped without any of the above, then it was just a coincidence that the sump had been cracked at the time, and you need to proceed as will says above.

Thanks a lot for the help guys, but the car is dead! After more investigation we found the engine had no compression. I have already found a worth replacement for it, and am glad to say it is another E30.
