how easy to remove the mechanism inside the steering column that connects the ignition barrel with the ignition switch..?
mine is worn and won't activate the starter in key position 3

That's all part of the lock barrel. Turn to first position, insert a pin into the hole on the face in the correct way*, and it just pulls out.
* This "correct way" will take you some time to get right, but once you've done it, you'll be able to take it out again the first time, if you put it back, or be able to take the barrel out of another E30 with no trouble.
Are you sure it's this piece that's worn, and not the plastic bit in the actual switch that it engages with, that's causing the problem?

thanks brian... lock barrel comes out as you described...
problem seem to be wear on the small shaft with two tiny tabs that engages the ignition switch.
