I have a 1989 BMW 325i Convertible. All original (US spec) with no modifications. Recently I have had problems with the stereo transmitting a high pitch squeal whenever the radio is switched on. It does not always happen but when it does it really cuts your eardrums in half !!

Any ideas what the matter is ?

It is a 1989 car so no CD installed! The sound is worse than Yoko Ono. Must be something electronic/electric going wrong. Very irritating as it comes and goes...

If it is, the pitch will vary with engine revs.
If it doesn't, it sounds like an internal fault in the radio. Probably a failed decoupling capacitor, resulting in a positive feedback loop = oscillation.
