In addition to my touring I have recently acquired a complete mechanically near perfect 318is but the bodywork lets it down, its still well salvageable, however the chance of a great soild 316i shell presented itself so it works out better to reshell the 318is into it.
The 318is is fitted with ABS and as I will be changing over suspension etc it would be nice to move over the ABS the only uncertainty I have at the moment is the wiring, is the ABS system on a separate loom and can this be fairly easily connected into the 316i's body loom, if its possible I would like to wire in the brake pad warning system if it is at all possible.
Just trying to establish if this is possible without going to the extent of changing over the complete loom or are the 2 looms completely different looms (all the fitted electrical items are the same except the ABS and I'm sure the pad wear warning system as the 316 has drum brakes)
I'm sure some of the knowledgeable people on here will be able to guide me and help
Many thanks for any help that can be provided

Some cars had the ABS wiring integrated into the main harness, others had a separate ABS loom, the only way to find out is to look at it, if you do need an ABS loom I have a couple available, its easy to fit

Presumably you mean the rear pad warning, as that for the front pads should already be fitted to the 316i.tiw30 wrote: if its possible I would like to wire in the brake pad warning system if it is at all possible.
The wiring for the rear pad sensor should already be present, up to the plug and socket by the fuel tank vent tube on the RH side of the rear seat pan. If you look at the plug for the loom that goes under the car for the fuel pump and speedo., you should see two pins that are connected together by a small loop of wire. This loop simulates a rear pad sensor on cars with rear drum brakes.
Thanks for that Brian, I was hoping the plug would be present and bridged, but I haven't got the shell into the garage to check it out. great help as usual
Just need to check the ABS wiring on the 318is when stripping it, I will let you know if I need a loom Dan the, thanks for the information and help

Dan not long after checking out the 318is as best possible th ABS wiring runs from the pump tp both front wheels and in through the big grommet in the bulk head it then heads to the ECU and a wire heading behind the dash (warning light) and 2 wires heading down the foot well presumably going to the rear to connect with the sensors, I take it I am correct in assuming that this is the separate loom, where does this loom connect too draw its power from?
It all looks relatively straight forward so far, the big problem will be removing the wiring for this crap alarm, stereo and speakers

Where it draws (switched) power from, depends on whether it's the early or late system. Check out pin 20 of the C101 engine loom plug and socket, to see if it has a red/yellow wire connected to it.
Other connections are to the accessories socket, and a wire from the pump directly to the battery + terminal.
