what is the official recommended interval, i thouight it was every 4 years or 20K please can anyone confirm for definite

Official BMW guidelines say at least every 60,000 miles or every 4 years, or every time belt tension is loosened.

cheers Si i did mine 9/2002 and since then done approx 10K upto 01/2006 so really i should change it. Been advised to change the tensioner and spring?

Yes, as Andy said (yes it's him :lol:) change the tensioner too, and if the water pump hasn't been done for a while get that changed too, as it's location requires removal of timing belt to change it.
