Hi guys quick back story before my question.

My 325i came with only one key, not long after owning the car I snapped my only key in the door as the door required you to wriggle it to lock or unlock. So, I ordered two new keys from BMW to fix the problem. When I received the keys they only worked in the ignition barrel but not the doors or boot. This makes 0 sense to me but whatever, I thought I'll buy a lock rebuild kit and just rebuild the drivers side to the new key so central locking works.

I have just taken the lock apart, got the laying out all the tumblers and realised.. This tumbler formation is meaningless to the new key, that's why I'm doing what I'm doing but what the hell do I do about rebuilding this lock to a key I have no idea where the tumblers go. Do I just trial and error it unlock the key turns in the lock? Will I have to put the key partially back together to test this? How many god damn combination's must there be! I'm a bit lost to say the least.

Thanks.

A crude way of doing it is to push the key into the barrel, and then file off any part of the tumblers that projects.
A better, but much more time consuming way is to make an accurate drawing of your key, or take accurate measurements from it, and select a tumbler for each position that looks like it will fit. Sort out each pair of tumblers, two at a time, just rough fitting them without the springs, and you'll get there eventually.
The reason your new key only fits the ignition (tried the glovebox?) is that the door locks have been replaced by some bodger with ones from a scrapper, instead of doing the job properly.

Thanks man, I like the sound of that second idea. I have access to a digital Vernier Calliper Micrometer so it should be an easy job. If I just go and fuck it up completely, will BMW help me out with this for a price?
And yeah that makes sense.. Half wishing I did that right now, Just want to lock her!
