Hi Guys I am new to E30 Zone, my first thread.

I got my E30 last week its a 320i Auto, generally in sound condition with only 110 000 miles on the clock.

However I have noticed that there is a whole lot of heat coming from the gearbox, around the stick, from underneath of plastic covers etc. The electric window buttons are really hot when you touch them after a long drive. It feels like constantly driving with the heater on, not very enjoyable in 30C heats!

Can you tell me if that's normal for those cars? Do they just get hot? Or is it an indication of a coming failure?

The gearbox seems fine apart from that.

Thanks guys.

Peace-Kaspar

After using my E30 for towing for a couple of hundred miles, the tunnel has been hot enough to cook eggs.
Window switch buttons get hot because there are incandescent bulbs in them.
Don't forget that most cars are wrong wheel drive, and don't have the gearbox anywhere near the cabin.

I've got the same car, and yes by the plastic auto gear selector, it gets very hot!

There's a chunk of heat proofing on the tunnel for probably this very reason! My E30 has been stripped for track use but occasionally gets a few motorway jobs, and the bare metal isn't nice on my leg :(
