Suddenly it overheated! Removed thermo, cleaned radiator, flushed bothways but situation persists. No sign of water in oil, no obvious leaks. Suggestions please.

Overheating when stationary or moving?
If stationary then the first port of call it the fan coupling. Some seem to last forever and some just die.

Thanks for the replies. As there is no hot air from the interior heating, I could assume an air lock. However, bleeding from the vent in the thermo housing, squeezing the hoses to expel any air, it still heats up. How do I test for a faulty water pump, maybe that is the prob.? All and any usefull input gladly received.

The test for a faulty water pump, and all the other faulty components, is in the link I posted.

Have you tested the thermostat you removed? It's likely (hopefully) that the reasons for your two overheating sessions are different. The reason for the first time remains to be determined, but the chances are that when you refilled the coolant, you caused an airlock. This can quickly cause the head to crack!
Fill the coolant bottle, and pull off the top heater hose at the bulkhead. Allow coolant to flow from the pipe and stub, then push the pipe back on and tighten the clip.

Problem solved by installing a new radiator, and whilst in there, fit new timing belt (old one showing signs of wear), new water pump to replace the leaking one, new thermostat, hoses and pressure cap.
So there must have been a blockage in the original as the "professional" cleaning was not done thourghly.
Runs fine now...justing waiting on new ICV.
