Would a Z3 rack give more clearance for my downpipe than an E36 rack?

No. Will be the same as the E36 rack. Also, I wouldn't bother with an E36 rack, go straight for an E46 'purple tag' rack.

Unfortunately I don't have a choice as I bought my car with an E36 rack already fitted. I was just wondering as I have bought a stainless steel exhaust and the downpipe hits the steering linkage.
