I recently put the Bosch S5 096 in my 325i. Works a treat...
I bought mine from Eurocarparts ebay store, at the time it was cheaper than any where else at +- £82...

.its from ebay and listed as a '008'....but it doesnt fit neatly into the gap....and the '0965' is apparently the same as the '008'?...

In what way doesn't it fit? Have you positioned the plastic end stop in the correct hole?

Should there be a plastic tray that sits over that lot and then battery on top of that?

Yes the plastic tray is missing, it sits higher so to allow more room for your battery, ive just purchased a big fuckoff battery and it fits no problem

The part is(was) around £12 new from BMW, so why would you pay nearly three times that from a chancer on ebay!
If you don't have the tray, how was/is your battery secured? Unsecured battery is a MOT test failure these days.
