how to check transmission is still good or not?

hello,

I'm in the process of buying m20 transmission, and I take my mechanic with me to check it.

and after he grab the front center rod of the transmission he try to rotate it turn right and left, after a few second he feel that it has a play a bit.

does it is sign that the transmission is not good? or it is normally?

any other method to check?

note: car is not run without engine so it is only transmission only.
