Is it possible to fit a new fuel tank to an e30 with removing the exhaust, can the exhaust just be taken off the hangers at the back and dropped down to give room to take the tank out and fit the new one?

You will defo want the exhaust out of the way if your doing this job with the rear beam still fitted! Dont forget to drop the prop shaft either :)

I will be doing this job soon. Am I right in thinking the prop shaft needs to be marked as to what position it joins to box and diff?

Not really. It's only when you split the two haves of the prop. that you need to be sure it goes back as it came apart
