I had an issue with my 1990 325 touring this morning.
Got in it as usual, turned on the ignition, all lights came up fine. Turned the key to start it, and it fired up, held the revs at 1120rpm for 2 or 3 seconds, and then cut out. Now it wont fire up. The starter motor is turning and the engine is cranking fine, but it will not fire at all.
Could this be a faulty engine earth?

It will almost certainly be that the fuel pump has quit, or the water pump pulley has chewed through the cable to the crank position sensor.
