Hey chaps. My car does rub the arches with the tyres over bumps - but worse than that, I get a loud rubbing / grinding noise which doesn't really sound like tyre-on-metal when I turn left.
Any ideas what I should be checking? Just had an MOT and no advisories on wheel bearings, but I will still check them anyways.
Ta!
Grinding / Rubbing when turning left?

Sure it's not something simple, like the plastic arch liner come loose?

I don't have arch liners. I'll get it up on the jacks tomorrow and have a poke around. It's weird - doesn't sound like a tyre, doesn't really sound like a whir-whir-whir-wheel bearing either - a bit smoother.

Brake disc back plate rubbing the disc is another simple check and fix.

From your other thread, you've just changed the brakes - did it make the noise before you changed them?

I never drove the car before I changed the front discs&pads - but I'd say it's the rear end of the car if I had to guess.
The rear brakes are just drums, and it has just had two new rear cylinders - but it did make the noise on the way to the garage for that work, too.

Manifold on the steering linkage? Check to see how tired your engine mounts are, in particular the o/s one. Have you got an E30 steering rack? I know its a problem on newer model racks but at a guess if your engine mounts are sh@gged enough perhaps that might be your problem.

They don't seem that bad - but I suppose they could be borked. Will check them out

Sounds like a bad wheel bearing to me.
Failed wheel bearings can be overlooked by MOT testers, as they only look for vertical play on the wheel. I've had 2 failed bearings on mine which only made a grinding sound when turning due to the weight transfer on the opposite wheel. That extra weight made the bad bearing grind.
