Rear brakes do very little of the overall braking. The real reason for replacing drums with discs is that maintenance is easier. Replacing discs and pads is a lot quicker than replacing drums and shoes.

That might be overstating a touch though surely Grr? Obviously a lot of tourings have disc brakes to cope with the extra weight, and sportier versions have to shed off more speed...?

The braking balance is still very unevenly split, and Markus has a 318i saloon, not a Touring.
Remember, it's not about braking force but heat dissipation; drums can easy generate the same braking force as discs, they just hit their brake-fade point quicker, which is why the heavier/sportier models have discs.

I ran a 316i touring alongside a 320i more door for several years, both had the same front pads and braking performance was the same for both cars, the touring, perhaps, had slightly more 'bite' when the brakes were used gently.
