getting round to removing the gearbox from my donor car and need to make an order of all the bits i need to replace (clutch, master/slave cylinder etc) but i keep hearing of this spigot bearing that needs to be replaced/added to my car. You will more than likely mash the old one getting it out (needs to be done with a slide hammer) and not worth the aggro, new ones are a couple of quid from motor factors.

Check the diameter of the lay shaft from the gearbox, BMW changed the spigot bearing diameter on my car in Sept '90. Caused no end of fun when i tried to change the engine fitted with a smaller diameter bearing...
You will definitely ruin the old one getting it out!

You can get the old one out by packing the hole in the crank end with grease and hitting a fairly tight fitting paralel punch through the centre hole of the bearing.
I did this once when I first discovered the change in layshaft diameter in the middle of a job, but better to buy a new one.
If you're really tight, Hotpoint washing machines use the same bearing as one of the drum bearings.

seriously just checked, i am assuming it would be worth getting items 2,3 and 4 (coverplate, feltering and cap) and what about the dowel and dowel pin wise to get those too or not necessary to spend my hard drilled oil reserves?
are the fixing bolts (item 12) re-useable?? sorry to ask what could be silly questions but i takes three weeks to get bits out here and i pay the carrage each time so best to be sure.
thanks again

you can re-use the cover plate bolts, if you're concerned about doing it 100% right 1st time then by all means invest in new ones, they wont break the bank Mr Lee
