i have an 86 model 320i which i converted to a 325i using a 87 model as a donor. the engine runs on the motronic system and wasnt quick enough. i have recently completely stripped the engine had everything lightened and ballanced its got up rated bearings and piston rings, the heads been flowed and ported and its got a stage two cam. the advice and help i am after is what induction system to go for. should i run it on a programable injection unit or 3 twin choke weber sidedraughts with 45 jets. in both cases i want advice on where to get them any prices.

Dbilas Throttle Bodies? Custom engine management like emerald with no AFM and MAF?

The emerald cost I hear is about Ԛ£1200 inc the mapping

Dbilas is around Ԛ£1400 -Ԛ£1600.

Thats probably the best youll do.

You could do it in two stages, get the emerald done and then later do the Throttle Bodies, the only downside being yuoll need another remap @ around Ԛ£250.

I tried stand alone management and its worth every penny.

If you can wire the Emerald up your self then it works out about 910 which includes mapping at Emerald.

I wired my Emerald up my self and i'm no lecy wizard.

If you get one i would strongly recomend you take it back to Emerald for Dave Walker to do the mapping.

If you go for carb's then the ECU is a bit cheaper.

The next mod for me power wise is to fit some e28 M5 TB's on to my M30 and a remap.

Hi Andy

Could you please give me more info on wiring up the Emerald?

Im thinking of doing this to my 327 Auto Cab

Did you need to add any extra sensors? How long did the wiring take?

All the work on the conversion i did myself in a council garage, all the engine tweeking was done at autosprint birmingham. he's made a top quality job and was definatly worth me traveling all the work he did plus additional parts cost Ԛ£1000, if anyone wants any work done or advise his number is 01675 464857

I sent Emerald a cheque for about Ԛ£750 last week for the ECU, trigger wheel, crank sensor, air and water sensors and throttle pot. Think mapping works out at Ԛ£235 after that.

I'd definately go for TBs in preference to carbs as carbs are just so primative by comparison (even if they do look cool)

Planning to make my own throttle bodies to fit directly onto the head and to give a bit more room for the induction piping which I think is gonna have to bend forwards to clear the servo.

Then, there's the pair of hair-dryers to be plumbed into the exhaust manifold :)

i would definatly remcomend using emerald. i used it on my E30, and dave walker was very helpful with all the info and the setting up. he charges Ԛ£200+vat to set your car up, no matter how long it takes to do. also if you decide to turbo your engine, then the ecu can be easily remapped, and you can run anti lag, traction control and launch control.
the wiring up isnt to bad either. also its something you can take from car to car.

Dave at autosprint is a legend, the work will, without doubt be first rate.
Did he reprofile the cam or did you get a new one ? the reason is ask is wehen the old cam is reprofiled you use shims which in my opinion is not good.
