hi all,
from countless searches it would suggest the pinion taps out
with a soft face hammer.
Now, I've been bangin on the pinion like a chimpanzee,
how much force should be necessary and is the end bolt the
only thing holding it?
cheers

It'll be in there bloody tight so 'tapping' is about 20% of what's necessary! If you don't have a press, refit the pinion nut so it's flush with the end of the threads so they're protected, place a bit of wood over the end. put the casing on the ground (on a bit of wood), not a bench. It needs to be firmly and rigidly supported or you'll be wasting energy. With a large hammer, whack the living shite of it!
Bingo

Yep
to be sure: you've got the flange off haven't you? ;)
If you can prize the seal out, try and direct a blowlamp onto the bearing. you're trying to heat the bearing to make it expand and loosen off the pinion.

That's properly brilliant!
Getting the races out is more a matter of tapping. work around them evenly with a punch and try not to damage the sides of the casing. if they 'bruise' then it'll need this damage dressing out to let a new bearing sit properly.
