Hi guys I have a rev counter not working. Turn on the engine and it goes straight round to 6000 and sits there until it is turned off and then it goes back to off

Ideas ?

What model E30 do you have?

Do you have the correct coding plug fitted, and was it working previously in your ownership?

Check the SI board batteries and connections to the back of the instruments cluster as a first step.

This is a 325i Motorsport cabby and have recently brought the car and it wasn't working then.
Speedo , fuel gauge and temp are working fine .

Do the SI lights work as they should?

The word inspection is lit , sometimes get the brakes symbol light on and then it goes off.

Have you tried resetting them, to see if they work as they should?

Quite often, when the batteries fail, the Inspection light comes on and stays on.

I will try resetting it tomorrow and see if it does anything. Is it worth doing that first before taking the instrument cluster out ?

Yes, just to establish whether or not the SI board batteries are working.
