I have just recently bought a Sport.

Due to the fact it keeps launching me sideways at every opportunity, I think I may have some kind of non-original diff.

It seems to have a very limited amount slip in the diff. I know that the sport came with an LSD, but did any manufacturers ever make one that had less 'slip' and if so how do I identify if I have one.

Thanks, Phil

Look for a tag on the diff the std diffs usually have one, it should say S (sperre or locking) then the ratio eg 3.91. It'll probably be a bit hard to read/rusty but if it has one of those I'd guess its a std one.
Apart from that Alpina did 40% LSDs instead of the std 25% AFAIK

E30's are pretty sideways anyway, even without an LSD, so sound lie normal behaviour too me esp with the slippy roads at the mo.
Also what rear tyres do you have? Decent ones (eg Eagle f1, Toyo T1-r) with loads of tread, or worn out budgets?!
Cheers,
Robin

Cheers for the info.

The current tyres are 'Wang Chung' or something and are really bad. My last e30 had tyres so bad that the tread peeled off them and I don't think the tyres are to blame in this case.

I feel that it is the diff, as the rear is incredibly easy to slide at very low revs provided that there is a lot of angle on the steering.

I'll check her out when she's on the ramp.

Sounds a bit strange to me too and like Lordschleife said checking suspension might be a good idea. My LSD is a bit better than standard and that means that I can't get it sideways (at least in the dry) just with the power of my 323i. A better LSD should really be more resistant to wheelspinning and sending you sideways to start with but then when it does it will probably let go quicker.

When I got my 323i the LSD was worn out and it seemed to change between open and locked all the time, even alternating around one corner, which made it a bit tricking. It wouldn't slide and then all of a sudden the LSD would lock and it would go into a big slide, etc. Is it anything like that?
