hi ive got abit of a fuel gauge problem, it seems to be showing a flase reading. i had filled the tank up today and done a 108 mile journey and the gauge had hardly moved. At first I was happy as i thought this is some good mileage on a motorway fun, but on the return jouney (54 miles) the needle had dropped just below the 2nd line from full. when driving locally the gauge seems to drop in a 2 steps towards empty and then one step towards full kind of motion. eventually it does show as being empty and the reserve light comes on.
surely this can't be normal or can it on a car of this age.
Another issue is that whilst on the motorway when I am doing over 3.5k revs for maybe half an hour there was alot of white smoke which I could see, Once I had dropped my speed to just under 70 which would allow the revs to drop to just under 3k the smoke would go.
When driving around town I have never noticed this.
now firstly this car hasnt been driven much in the past 5-8 years maybe 500miles a year if that. I have given it full oil filter service change etc including spark plugs fuel filter, oil filter and drive belt.
Its a 1990 316i automatic. I was going to sell it but since being insured on it a few weeks ago, its staying
