1991 325i, 111k, manual.

Ever since I bought it, I've found at pretty much 1.5k rpm whatever gear I'm in there's a rattle which sounds like the exhaust. I find I can only hear it while driving.. Bringing the car up through the revs with my head in the bay means I don't hear anything.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there any common problems? Could it possible be anything to do with the driveline if it only happens while moving?

Thanks

I'll check them out Brian, thanks. I guess I should at least be able to see what's really close to things when it's in the air when I can't replicate the noise..

Thanks to Brian's advice, I reckon I've found the culprit. It looks like part of it is missing.. I'm also wondering why there's a square headed bolt attached in a groove on the body but not connected to anything!

Looking at this page, it seems there's a lot of different parts.. Can anyone help with which of these I'll require? http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=18&fg=05

Here's some pictures:

At a guess, you probably still have No.9 attached to the gearbox. You will definitely need No.17, you may also need No.11 depending on if its broken at the end No.17 should bolt to. You'll also need bolts 20 and 22.

The stud in the last pic I think will be for the crap guard near the gearbox, which you may also be missing.

Great thanks, so it just looks like 11 and 17 are the upper and lower parts of the clamp and there should be one vertical bolt in between the two pipes then one bolt on the drivers side of the pipes. No.9 and the bolt for it are ok.

I'm really missing a lot there then :o

You might find the remains of the lower mount and bolt No.20 are still bolted to the upper mount (No.11), so you could possibly reuse the upper mount.
That said, if its all crusty and the bolt is rusted in, its no big deal to replace both.

I expect you're also missing the gearbox guard in this link (no association with seller)... http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewit ... 1171000825

I think that's what your extra square headed stud is for - there should be another stud in the opposite grove, but its probably fallen out.

Thanks James. I really can't remember if it's there or not! I'll have to check. Placed a request with Cotswold BMW :) Can't wait to finally get rid of this annoying rattle
