Car had been stored 8.5 yrs - Put a new fuel (Bosch) pump in 3 weeks ago - started fine and engine runs well. Then took car via trailer to garage for check up - Drove back from garage, happy with new MOT (passed no probs), new cam belt, and full service so car sounds & drives wonderfully.
Then after 6miles drive home, fuel pump starts screaming!!! When engine switched off and starts again all is quiet but after few miles she's a screaming again!
Any ideas of what could be wrong other than duff pump.
Send it back you say - well yes I will but I had to hit it (as Ezone suggested) with hammer to get new pump in - if I send it back to carparts4less no doubt they'll take issue with minor hammer damage and may not swap!!!

Please excuse my input if it sounds a bit simple (just a plumber) but it sounds like whatever is supplying the pump is starving it of fuel....my red top Facet pump in my oval stock car days did exactly that when starved. Also possibly the reason that the other pump died? Check tank and blow fuel line leading to the pump.....I think.

Where, exactly, did you read this??????
Check that there isn't debris/rust in the tank that may have blocked the fuel filter.

When installing pump I was advised (quite rightly) by member that you have to push down pump and hit with hammer / bolster chisel to spin it into position. With the new rubber washer this was an effort (I used screwdriver so some damage to flange). No doubt BMW have a special tool.
Will drain tank and flush - problem is the pump filter sits inside tank in a a cup-like area and hard to get all debris out of this - didn't really want to take tank out.

I know what you mean about fitting, I had to tap mine into position with a driver and hammer.....but I tapped it, didn't hit it hard.

Anyway, is the car running OK when it screams? Almost sounds like you have the feed and return the wrong way round.

Yeah, car runs really well - I was in slow traffic and when I heard screaming thought it was roadworks, until the roadworks followed me all way home!
Feed and return - Just connected the rubber fuel pipe on top of pump same as before when it was removed. The new pump is the full unit, so no soldering or messing around. Where do you mean feed and return wrong way round?

Depends on the tank size, probably fine though just recall someone connecting it up the wrong way so the car would only get fuel after sitting and being off for a while and it possibly made odd noises.

Probably wrong though. :P

Perhaps it's one of those units that will quieten down after it has bedded in a bit...

I've since filled tank to half full and all clear now, no more screaming = think it must have been what was mentioned by 'brianmoooore', rust/debris fouling pump filter.
