Need to get at the back of the fuel gauge to tighten the nut? Can anyone give me good details on how to do this.

Easy. First remove the steering wheel, you don't have to but it's a bit easier with it off. Just prise the BMW badge out of the middle of the wheel with a screwdriver, then loosen the nut and pull it off. Then you need to remove the lower bit of trim that goes beneath the wheel and above the pedals - just three plastic screws that slot in either a locked or unlocked position. Then unscrew the steering column shroud with the four screws (two on top and two halfway down underneath in the bit with the hole). Next you need to stick your fingers up behind the dash and feel for two largeish metal nuts with grooves on them - these unscrew and then you can remove the fascia between the steering column and dash. Next up you just need to unscrew off the fascia and then the two screws that hold the instrument cluster in position. You will then be able to tilt the whole cluster forwards, then unclip the connections at the back and pull it out. Refitting is a reversal of the above!
