Best described as a cyclic squeaking which only occurs when the vehicle is moving, so it's in the propshaft somewhere. Initially it was happening when pulling away in first, but if you dipped the clutch it ceased. Now it is happening across the gears. Is this the prop shaft bearing going or, is it something else please?
Thanks in advance for any helpful advice.

The prop shaft bearing when failing will usually only be noticeable under hard accleration. It will generally vibrate or make a knocking noise under the car.

Many thanks Rtaylor. Very helpful. At least that seems to eliminate the prop shaft bearing.
For others looking, this only starts to happen when the car has been driven for a while. It doesn't happen when it is cold.

If it's only happening when the clutch is dipped, my bet would be the clutch release bearing is goosed. Had an Opel Manta some years ago that did the same thing, turned out to be a worn out clutch release bearing.
BMW and Opel, both RWD, both german, both good fun

Many thanks, Silverfang. That's actually what I originally suspected, but it's not actually when the clutch is dipped, it's when it is engaged, moving from stationery, and then the noise develops with power applied.

The noise has gone now. Talking with an AA man his best guess was that it was dirt around the thrust bearing. Hopefully so. Thanks again to those who responded to this thread.
