ok i want to fit my map mirror to my new 318is

i know there bastards to put back in but thats something im sure i can overcome :?

my main concern is that my new one didnt have an electric sunroof - but my knew one does. and i swear to god the mirrors sit differently; an it just doesnt look like the map one is going to go back in.

is it just me pranging or do i have a spare map mirror on my hands?

You are pranging (wtf?)

The mirrors are the same regardless of electric sunroof or not.

A big hammer.

I did mine by putting one side in first, then using a flat blade screw driver, and levering the other side in.

took me two hours to fit it

the old one was a bitch to remove, then once it was out i wired it along the lining like before. Then i realised getting the mirror in was going to be impossible. So i droped the sunroof panel and it became a whole lot easier. Except getting the mirror in that took another half hour

not to bad tho

So can these be fitted to cars with manual roofs?
Where does it plug in? The ones I've seen on ebay sometimes come with a long wire, sometimes don't, I just presumed the seller had left it out. Does the long wire run down the N/S A pillar and plug into the sunroof power connector? (and the short one plug straight into the nearby S/R motor loom)
Have I just answered my own question?

If you haven't got an electric sunroof, you can still fit the maplight mirror, you can wire it to check control, or interior lights.
Even better still is if they supply the correct lenght of wire as you mention, it has the correct plugs, and connects to a wire at the junction box (not the electric sunroof one)

I wired mine to interior light

sunroof motor seems to be playing up so didnt wana risk it

my last one was wired to the door light activater switch, so wen i opened the door they came on, closed the door an they went off, then i could turn them on manually

Hey, that's exactly what I've been wanting to do (to improve the horrible front seat lighting). I'd heard that wiring them to the door switch meant they'd ONLY operate with the doors open. So you're saying that it was re-wired so the 'off' switch position simply became the 'door' position? Very handy!

thats what i did yeah. takes a long time an bastard to get to, you have to wire it to the right side of the foor switch connections (318is seem to have two?) but when i closed the door they went off an then i could manually operate them.

for earth, i used it on the sunvisor screw

I think they were only standard fit in the 325i Sports and M3's
1 & 2 bed flats in Bournemouth areas, with parking

I have also seen them fitted to various E30's, such as the green 88 325i I bought to break, don't think it was fitted after, it was all wired in properly.
I've also seen a few late 316i tourings with them fitted, BMW probably trying to clear some stock.

Got one Ԛ£20 :D
It has the proper wire with the connectors ets.
I dont have a sunroof in mine,
Where are they supposed to connect to Simon? as i havnt had chance to look yet.
Is it the main junction box behind the glove box?
Will it come on with doors open, and switch on with doors closed in this J box?
Or does it need re-wiring?

It will plug into the junction box above the glove box, when you plug it in here, it will only come on when switched on with ignition switched on too.

You need to wire to the RHD interior light and change the connections around so that pos is permanent and earth is switched

Just read Dans post and I like the idea of re-wiring it all so that it comes on when you open the doors and still functions normally whilst driving etc... so can anyone provide clear instructions on what wires should go where so I can do this?

I'm sure if you take out the passengers side front speaker the proper connector should be in behind there to plug the mirror loom into at least it has been on the cars I've had

i fitted one to my iS, it didnt take long at all and i just ran the wire along from the mirror mounting hole to the A pillar and down to the junction box behind the glove box. the map lights come on when you flick the switch, irrespective of ignition/interior lights, etc.

Just re-found this post as am trying to fit mine today.

So basically, undo the drivers door switch, swap the ends around and plug back in. I follow, but then where does the wires from the mirror go to?

if you have the original loom its a doddle to fit, there's a thread here somewhere about it. The plug you need to find for the original loom is tucked away just next to/behind the passenger side front speaker. You'll need to run the wire from the maplight mirror behind the headlining, down the left hand pillar to the footwell. it wont take longer than an hour and that includes 30 mins trying to get the maplight mirror to pop into place. winkeye
