When my wipers are on intermittent they stutter and stop at the top of the stroke, i have read the article about re-greasing the motor contacts but it was also suggested to me that this could be a problem with the relay. Is this true? If so can anyone tell me which relay it is and how i could test it?
Thanks Rich

I think the relay problem is very rareley the cause. to check if it is the relay, just exhcange it for a known working one.

You could also try tapping the relay (the long black one) in the fusebox, when you have the wipers on, any problem with the relay, you should notice a pattern when you tap it.
As Kam said though, I'd be 95% it would be the wiper motor, I've had the problem on 3 different E30's, and cleaning the motor sorted it every time.

Yup.. wiper motor dude.
I changed the relay 3 times to no effect. Cleaned the motor and Hey Presto!
