Central locking solenoid

You should start a 'Polsta's Issues' thread and just keep listing new things every day :chuckle:

That bracket fits against the door skin, the lock barrel passes though it and both are retained by a C clip.

You have bought and built up new lock barrels,of course? :D

cheers jim ,:D theres not much, its been so long, so just getting familiarized with it all again and figuring it all out, reason i asked- im just sorting the locking and doors now, but the front solenoids are in there and the pins move when alarm/other solenoids are pressed, so i thought it was all done, what exactly is this bit for and how does it fit and connect to the solenoid ?

For £20 per door for a lock re-build kit,you are making a very big mistake.
When your key bends in the re-fitted old lock,rendering it useless,you will say to yourself;
'I wish I had taken daimlerman's advice and fitted new locks'!

This usually happens at the most inconvienient time.... winkeye

so is it easy to do ? on one of the locks, if looking at it from the outside, the chrome bits either side of the key slit are a bit bent , is that bit in the kit aswell ?

i also need to get a new spare key

Lock re-build kit contains all you need to build a new barrel to suit your key.
Bigwinn, among others, have posted recently just how easy it is to build up a new barrel from one of these kits.Driver's door is a 'must do',passenger door is far less vital.

I'd only do the one door as its not often your gonna be openning it on the passenger side... Plus that gets hardly any wear so just make sure its nicely lubbed up

No, its not the lock solenoid, its a micro switch that activates the dead lock feature of the central locking

The decision whether or not to fit a lock barrel rebuild kit depends a lot on the history of the car. If it left the dealer with an immobiliser/alarm fitted, and this is still working with the original remote, then it's likely that the lock barrel has hardly ever seen any action at all. In the ten years I had my red touring in my sig. as the main daily driver, I doubt if the key went into the driver's door lock more than a dozen times.

thanks brian, i think its good, i gave them a good clean with engine cleaner removed the gunk and oiled them and they feel slick and smooth and about 30% better than they did feel, and i shall be using it via alarm fob anyway so wont really be using the key, but its on the to do list just not vital for now

is there any way to tell if the locks and key are the cars original ? even if i took them to bmw could they ?

the price of a new blank torch key was only £2 more for one pre cut from the vin, which i thought was a decent price and cheaper and better than taking to a key cutters, but obviously i have no idea if they are the original 27 year old locks

Original keys are easy to identify - with a magnet. BMW keys are steel, aftermarket ones are brass.
Chances are that if your key fits the glovebox, then they are original.

Yes obviously it's an original BMW key, but I
Mean any way of telling if the key/ locks are the cars original and set never been changed ? So I don't order a pre cut key and it turn up and not work
