E30 M3 intrument cluster oil temp guage

I have recently fitted an E30 M3 instrument cluster including the correct oil temperature switch, i have connected 12v+, ground - and run a cable from the temp sensor connected to the third terminal (center pin) on the 3pin plug at the rear of the cluster dedicated for the oil temp guage. when the ignition is turned on the oil temp guage goes from 0 to full scale deflection (150) and stays in that position despite the fact that the oil is still cold. I have checked the continuity of the cable from the temp sensor with the cable clipped off the sensor and on the sensor (to ground when plugged in) all is good, i then replaced the sensor for a new one but still the same problem. Anyone got any suggestions as to what i could check next? Thanks in advance.
