Going to do a clutch change soon and gear linkage as well, so I thought would be useful to replace the gearbox mounts too.

The only problem is when I search for the mounts on ECP's website or even GSF, I get 2 different mounts for some reason? Not sure which one's right?

Those with a M20B25, try putting your reg and search, you'll see what I mean...

And by the way are Q-drive mounts any good?

Otherwise, had a look on eBay and found ones made by Febi Bilstein here >>> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E12-E21-E ... 43bb82014e

Also not sure about it, because their OE part number (23711109173) doesn't match with the one I found on BMWfans.info which is: 23 71 1 175 939

Would be useful if you could advise what else I should replace while I'm there?

Thanks

Q drive ones are shite. I just bought new febi mounts from GSF, had to call them though as they were not listed on the website.

While your at it check and replace where neccessary the prop guibo, bearing and carrier.

And the gear selector shaft oil seal on the back of the gearbox.

Why are there 2 part numbers for the shaft seal when the dimensions for both are listed as the same?

Where are you finding these part numbers? ETK doesn't recognise either of them.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Just realized, the mounts were different because one is for manual and the other one is for auto.

Had a look at my mounts today and they didn't look that bad, but will replace them anyway :)

Good idea about the guibo, as I checked mine and it's a bit tired, so will put that on my list, as well as the gearbox seal, which is leaking BADLY.

RTayler, which bearing and carrier do you mean?

P.S. I was also wondering how big of a job is it to replace the rear crankshaft seal? Is it just a matter of removing the flywheel or you have to remove the cover behind it, which would mean draining oil, replacing oil pan gasket, etc, etc?

I've never seen a leaking E30 crank nose seal, crank tail seal or gearbox output seal. On a M20 engined E30, a leaking crank tail seal is invariably a failed sump gasket, and a leaking gearbox output shaft seal is always a leak from the selector shaft right above it, with oil running straight down and around the output shaft seal, before dripping off underneath.

Second one is an obsolete part number - ETK doesn't recognise it.
First one is the gearbox output shaft seal part number for the whole E30 range, but, in my experience, never needs replacing. The seal above is the problem.

The one half way along the propshaft. It's the carrier that fails, never the bearing, but although the bearing is available on its own, the carrier is only supplied complete with bearing.

Thanks for the info Brian - good to know...

Looking at this pic > http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E30/4 ... ing_parts/

Number 17 is the selector shaft seal you're talking about?

Unfortunately the one I bought from GSF did not include the bearing , but I had bought a bearing previously as I didn't realise it was the carrier that would be faulty.

Don't buy from the dealers, I was quoted £116, where as GSF was under £20.

Not too worried about the propshaft side of things, but will replace the guibo since mine is definitely past its best, although the bearing and all that will be left for later.

Okay, just want to make sure I've got all the things covered:

Clutch kit
Gear linkage
Gearbox mounts
Rear crank seal
Gearbox input/output seals
Selector shift shaft seal
Guibo

As Brian advised, I won't replace the seals which are good, but obviously will have to check to know 100%.

That looks like everything, unless I've missed something?

You have to unbolt the prop. centre bearing to get the prop off of the guibo/gearbox, so it would be a very false economy not to replace it at the same time if there's any sign of deterioration in the mount.
Note that if your guibo has a heavy metal sleeve surrounding it, this can be left off with no ill effects when you fit the new one. It's a vibration damper which isn't required with guibos made to current standards.

I'm not exactly a mechanic, but can't you drop the prop by simply disconnecting it from the gearbox and the diff, keeping the middle section together?

No, because you need to make it effectively shorter to get it out. This is done by unbolting the centre bearing and dropping it down, so that the prop forms a V shape. This will give just enough room to get the locating spigot at the front of the prop out of the gearbox output shaft.

Ok, thanks for that mate.

Any recommend source to get the carrier complete with the bearing?

Found this on eBay, but not sure about it > http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-DRIVE-SHA ... 5ae3d1ae4d

Made by Meyle? Never heard of it...

That one should be OK, but the ad. and the fit list are incorrect! Pre facelift and post facelift E30s use a different bearing carrier. That one is for post facelift cars, if the BMW part number gven is correct.

I've done some Googling and now I'm scared to touch anything that says Meyle or Hans Pries on it...

The centre carrier posted above is Meyle and I found another one here > http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E30-E32-E ... 2a223d03b6

This one is made by Hans Pries or more like boxed by them, because seems like they just put Chinese crap in "German" boxes and ship them out...

Unless GSF got some good stuff, I'm a bit lost here.
