Hey guys,

Will I damage an M20 starter by putting 12v across it straight from an external battery? Just want to check it engages properly with the ring gear before I start building everything else.

But you can't "check it engages properly with the ring gear" without bolting up a gearbox.
Just applying power to the motor (inner large terminal) will just spin the motor. If you want to throw the pinion over as well, you need to connect power to the outer terminal and then short the medium sized terminal to it.

Thanks Brian, no worries. Yeah, it's already in the car, engine mated to gearbox etc. I just want to make sure I don't have any issues here requiring removal of engine & box before I sort out wiring, coolant, fit intake manifold etc.
