Needed to lift the carpet (poss. damp) and unable to remove sill strips without breaking them. Is there any knack to this? Are replacements still available and poss. cost?

Slide them towards the front of the car until the first rear clip is exposed. Then lift the rear and pull them backwards, and they should slide off the rest of the clips.
They're fragile, so don't use too much brute force.

You then need to remove the clips from the sill and refit them to the strip before refitting to the car. If you intend to remove your carpet regularly, then make cut outs in the channel in the strip, about half way between where the clips seat when in the car. Sliding the strip just a couple of inches will release it then.
