Pump has been very whiney recently last night put my foot fown and lost power instantly.put more petrol so showing 1/4 tank still wouldnt fire up jus turns over.

Looked at wiki last night i have spark, not sure on fuel to injectprs yet but, connected a multimeter to the pump electrical connector and cranked.get plenty of volts but cant hear the pump. Im guessing open and shut case no? If so will order one today.

Im assuming from wiki my other option is DME but wouldn't that stop the pump getting any volts? My acid test onight hopefuly was going to be to disconnect the pump rubber hose at source into a bottle, crank and see if anything comes out...

M20 engine 89 2 door 320se cheers.

You need to do a proper test on the pump. Either give it 12V, or remove the fuel filter and see if you p!ss out fuel when cranking. That will determine whether your pump is shagged or not.

Not necessarily, if you haven't checked that power is reaching the pump when you crank.
Pull the two pin plug off of the pump and connect a 12 volt bulb (5W or 21W) to the plug and see if it lights when the engine turns.

Meter is meaningless. Needs to be a bulb.

Now I've re-read he wiki it does say NOT to use a multimeter :o: Why is that then? Does a multimeter smooth out current where as a bulb would flicker? I'm intrigued.

Anyway, now I have my new trusty bulb testing kit I fashioned this morn, the pump electrical connector shows a very healthy bulb glow. Shall I buy a fuel pump now? I'm travelling down to Swansea today (by van) so I'm sure I can find an ecp with one in stock, and I need the BM runningtomorrow to a last take roun my neighbour's :x

If the bulb lights, and the pump doesn't run, then the pump is deceased. You can probably bring it back to life by a good smack on the top of it with a hammer handle, but it'll fail again.
A meter draws an extremely small current, and would still read almost full voltage through a (fault) resistance of several thousand ohms.

There's only two types of high pressure pump fitted to E30s - one that goes in the tank, and one that goes in front of the left rear wheel arch on ancient stuff.
There's two versions of the complete pump assembly for in tank pumps (one pipe and two pipe), but the actual pump is the same.

Indeed! 8O The latter kind were very hard to track down from ECP but sorted in the end. The sodding fuel level sender unit would not fit without "tweaking" the pump frame :x So in out in out..... sorted eventually and she did fire up first time though so relieved - thanks.

I have another question - I know I installed the fuel filter a while back with the arrow pointing the same way as the old one. But looking at the pipes, I can't trace one end accurately but the other one certainly goes back to the engine. The arrow isn't pointing this way though. So presumabley I've had the old and new filter the wrong way, perhaps knackering the pump?
