hello, after got engine block crack and oil pump house, I decided to find complete engine block complete set with oil pump etc but still use my old top engine and old oil pan.

my question does e36 m40 318i engine is exact same with e30 m40 318i engine? of course I know the oil pan is different so I will use my old oil pan.

I found the piston diameter is different and the piston rod at e36 m40 engine is short compare to e30 m40 engine. does is it better?

any one here know what is other else different? oil house pump etc same or not?

thank you for the info

hello willnz

no it is same 1.8.

does output shaft from e36 cranksaft will fit into my old e30 transmission? because I see at the realoem catalog that it has different transmission between e30 and e36.

so I assume that it will not fit?

need info

You can swap the mounts over from the e30 M40 if you need to.

hello, Jos

so basically it is no problem to use engine from e36 m40 to e30 m40 and it is plug and play with transmission, ecu, etc

how about piston compression does is it same 1:8.8 or higher?

does the ignition controled by ecu will be same? or will be different?

Thank you

I know it will fit, that's about it, the M40/M42 from the e30/e36 all share the same block.

Why not just fit the whole engine and ECU? Head change means new gaskets and headbolts. Loom change has got to be easier?

The E36 engine has a different cambelt tensioner (big toothed one) to the pre 1991 E30. Just swap the sump, loom, mounts and possibly exhaust manifold and fit the whole engine.
