Please help! My wife's Xmas presents are in the boot of my 1991 e30 318 is, the boot did work fine, it does unlock but the boot won't open! Any ideas? Would a stronger battery be better as mine is weak?

Battery will only effect the central locking.Have you unlocked the boot manually with the key?

Key should open the boot lock, independently of the central locking, dead locked or not, as long as it's not a valet key.
If your key doesn't fit, the central locking should unlock it with the engine running, even if the battery is weak.
Fortunately, there is an alternative way into an E30 boot if the lock won't co operate.
Remove the rear seat base (pulls up), remove the seat back (a 10mm self tapper each side, low down) and you will see the knock out panel for the optional ski hatch in the rear bulkhead. It pushes out quite easily by breaking a few very small steel tabs around the outside, then you will have to push the front boot liner panel out of the way to reveal your stash of presents.
The hole is big enough to push a child through, armed with a 10mm socket, to unscrew the bolts holding the lock in place.

Job done, easy when you know I guess! Better strip and clean up the lock
