I've read the wiki article on this but think maybe I've got the wrong end of the stick. Should I remove the spring and pin from it's housing before removing the tensioner pulley?

Spring and pin will fall off when you remove the tensioner. The spring pressure is the only thing keeping it in place.

Slacken the 13mm and the long stud, big screwdriver to push tensioner fully back to compress spring and retighten 13mm. I fit a new spring as well, buttons from BMW.
