the other day, i managed to flood the engine while trying to leave work!

after flattening the battery, using up half a can of coldstart and a can of WD40, and the calling the AA out the following day(lazy git i know) it started again (fuel pump fuse removed to clear the flood... a neat trick to remember!).

the AA chappie reckons it's heavily overfueling, hence the original flood. even before this it was (and still does) splutter and cough for 30 seconds or so after starting. this clears with a blip of the throttle so points towards flooding on startup maybe? it's also now 'burbling' and popping on the overrun which it didn't do before. the blue temp sender was changed for a new one a few months ago in an effort to et more than 18mpg so i assume this is good. :)

the more serious problem is that since this happened, it's now chucking out a great plume of burning oil smoke (blue, smelly) on startup. this clears when warm after half a mile or so. the head had very good condition valves and guides when i rebuilt it 10 months ago and obviously has 10 month old stem seals.

any ideas what's going on? i suspect it could be two coincidental faults but it's a bit odd! :?

also, adding to the cracked sump and clattering gearbox, it's tempting to say NO no M20B25 wrongness and HELLOOOOOOOOOOO to M30B35 rightness!

If it is running rich, i would look at a problem with the AFM, not the screw on the AFM, as this is only for idle, or maybe a fuel system overpressure ?

any way of testing any of these rather than random parts swapping?

You can test the AFM. You need a multimeter to check the resistance values. Althought i have no idea what they are or weahter it should be a linear increase or not.
