Not really sure where to start doing this

The siren for the standard bmw alarm is on the pass side wing where i want to put my m20 facelift coolant tank for my m30 conversion.

But i may aswell remove the whole lot as it has never worked, but i do not want to start chopping away at wires and then find the car wont start etc...

Electrics have never been my strong point but i can follow basic instructions if needs be :)

Remove the glovebox(that's a cubby if you live in NZ...)and the liner panels behind.

Trace the wiring coming back through the bulkhead to the main alarm box.
Trace each wire carefully to it's source, you will almost certainly find that the alarm box and it's gubbins interupt wires by adding loops that run through the alarm,so un-plugging and re-connecting is all that you will need to do.

Expect the solid green wire(ign switch to coil)to be split in this way at a socket built into the loom,if you are lucky, you will find a loop of green wire with a suitable plug taped up nearby.
Likewise, the black/yellow(starter signal wire)could be interupted, and if you are really unlucky, the green/violet(fuel pump feed)may also have been fiddled with.

Expect wiring to dissapear towards the boot(the boot light switch can be included into an alarm)in a similar way, there could be a micro switch activated by the n/s bonnet roller....and of course look for a connection into the interior light circuit behind the n/s speaker panel.

That should keep you going for a day or so!
