i have an '86 320.
pretty sure its jetronic not motronic. the was an auto and i have since converted it to a manual.
anyway the car has alway idled too high. it usually sits about 1700rpm when cold and around 1200rpm when warm.
i recently broke another so went about swapping bit over. so far i have changed
throttle body and tps (all clean)
temp sensors
air flow meter
checked over and over and over for any vacum leaks
now im running out of ideas???
high idle please help!!!

As long as your engine warms up fairly quickly and operates at the right temperature, the thermostat's probably OK. The water heated slide valve is the usual cause of high idle on L-Jet 320i and 323i models.69rat wrote:on another thought. as its water controlled could a iffy stat also give bad idle?
poolnoodle recently had this issue and sorted it:

Have you checked the ignition timing?
Don't forget, these were set up to run back in the day of leaded fuel, so will probably need adjusting for unleaded.

Don't give up hope yet. There's a few things left to try, documented here:
http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/inde ... ake#Idling
and be aware that just because you've changed components doesn't mean that the part can't be the problem - you still need to check the wiring to make sure the ECU is getting signals from the TPS and other sensors. I had a dodgy idle for months before working out the wire inside the blue temp sensor plug was loose.
